“Bulletin Board Etiquette”

Safety bulletin boards are an effective and under-utilized way to communicate with employees.

Most employers have only one safety bulletin board.  When it comes to safety bulletin boards, most employers would benefit by having multiple boards.  Consider placing them:

  • at the time clock
  • in lunch rooms
  • near the tool room
  • outside the safety office
  • in the locker room

I like to see the following items posted on safety bulletin boards:

  • safety posters
  • safety rules
  • company’s safety policy statement
  • safety committee minutes
  • OSHA poster
  • safety suggestion box
  • accident rates and statistics
  • new employee photos
  • agenda/schedule for future safety meetings
  • days since last OSHA recordable accident
  • third party inspection reports (e.g. OSHA, insurance company, fire marshal, etc.)
  • emergency evacuation maps
  • maps showing location of: fire extinguishers/hoses, first aid kits, chemical spill clean-up kits, etc.

Inspect your safety bulletin boards daily.  Keep postings updated and free from graffiti.
