Inadequate lighting contributes to many on-the-job accidents.   One study shows that “accidents can be reduced about 20% by improving lighting conditions”.  But how do you know if you have enough lighting for a specific task or area?

Light meters are an indispensable instrument that all safety professionals should be familiar with.  Consider purchasing a light meter for use when conducting  plant inspections and accident investigations.  Inexpensive light meters can be purchased that will allow you to measure lighting levels at your workplace.
