Is Complying With OSHA Enough?

At many companies, the main safety emphasis is  “OSHA Compliance”.  But is complying with these governmental standards enough?   By fully complying with governmental standards are you are doing everything necessary to reduce “disabling injuries”  to your employees?   The answer to both questions is – NO!

Liberty Mutual in their “Research To Reality” newsletter (vol 15 no 3) identifies the top 10 causes of disabling injuries in the USA in 2010.  Six of the top ten causes OSHA does not have a standards on!  Likewise, the top two causes  (“overexertion” and “fall on same level”) OSHA does not address in any of their voluminous standards!

While it is important to understand and comply with governmental workplace safety and health standards, realize that you can’t stop there.  Go beyond compliance and also focus on preventing disabling injuries caused by the following leading accident types that are not covered by standards –

  • Overexertion
  • Fall on same level
  • Bodily reaction
  • Highway accidents
  • Repetitive motion
  • Assaults & violent acts
