Nursing Home Back Injury Study

Nursing homes and long term care facilities have twice the on-the-job injury rate that private industry has.  The majority of these injuries are from handling residents/patients.

The NCCI and the University of Maryland School of Medicine conducted a study of nursing home back injuries at 265 facilities.  Their findings are published in a 19-page report is entitled “Safe Lifting Programs at Long-Term Care Facilities and Their Long Term Impact on Workers Compensation Costs“.  In this report, they identify eleven variables that “best predicted safe lifting practices”.

If you work at a long term care facility, you should review this report to see if your resident handling program addresses these eleven critical factors.
