Safety Awakening – “Be A Problem Solver”

“Be A Problem Solver”

There are two types of safety professions – the problem “solver” type, and the problem “finder” type!

The problem “finder” is also know as the enforcer or cop.  These folks are always out looking to find something wrong, kind of like they are playing a game of “gotcha”.

The problem “solver” type also is always on the lookout for unsafe acts and unsafe conditions, but he takes it one more step.  The solver will also identify/evaluate/implement solutions to the problem.  For example:

  • solvers find trash and pick it up
  • solvers find a simple to correct hazard, and they take the time to correct it themselves
  • solvers offer multiple solutions to any problem, and assertively endorse the one they prefer (and are able to explain why)
  • solvers find an employee acting unsafely and  immediately approach the employee, point out the problem, explain the proper behavior, and persuade the violator to commit to the improvement

Which type of safety professional do you want to be known as?
