Safety Awakening – “Lead From The Front”

“Lead From The Front”

As a safety professional, you need to be a leader who is willing to do whatever you suggest your employees do.  Don’t approve (or supervise) a hazardous operation from your office – get out there on the front line and “lead from the front”.

Don’t throw the employee into a dangerous situation and hope for the best.  You are the safety expert, get out there, evaluate the risk, and don’t permit any activity that you wouldn’t do yourself.

Here are just a few examples of where I put myself in harm’s way in order to determine if an operation was acceptable for employees to do:

  • operating a new machine to evaluate its’ guarding before the employees used it
  • performing an air test in a potential IDLH area before allowing employees into the area
  • checking out a tricky confined space entry before allowing employees to enter
  • climbing scaffolds, ladders, and catwalks to determine if they were safe

You are the most knowledgable person at your company when it comes to occupation safety and health.  Don’t allow employees to enter a questionable area or operate an untested machine without first checking it out yourself!
