Safety App Of The Week

July 21, 2014 No Comments

Below is this week’s “Safety App of the Week“.  Every Monday we publish an article that reviews and rates a new workplace safety app.  Our testing is done on Apple iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3s.  We rate each app from to ♥♥♥♥♥ (♥♥♥♥♥ is the best).  Prior app of the week articles are archived here.

Risk Assessor Lite

Official Description

“Fully working version of the successful Risk Assessor App – Try it out for free, and if you like it, simply upgrade to enable unlimited emails, edit risk assessments and add multiple reference photos.

Risk Assessments are important and potentially life saving. People are scared of them, of getting it right and including everything necessary on the report.

Risk Assessor produces the risk assessment report for you. Simply photograph the area in question and drag ‘n’ drop the pre-loaded risks over the photo. Next choose the most relevant Control Measure, Worst Case outcome and Likelihood and you’re done. No paperwork, and a fully personalised, professional PDF Risk Assessment report is created.

You’ll still need to make sure that the Risks & Control measures you choose are relevant to the site your assessing, but the hard work is done for you, leaving more time to fully consider the risks.

Key Features

•Drag and drop risks over photo
•Fully personalised PDF report
•Preloaded, editable risks & control measures
•Add your own risks & control measures for easy repeat use
•Save & email the report from app
•Save paperwork time, enabling a more focussed Risk Assessment
•Sync your saved assessments with iCal – set reminders1

Thumbs Up

  • cost is free – enables you try out the “Risk Assessor” app before you buy it for $6.99
  • no registration or sign in required
  • take a photo of a work station and then drag and drop the hazard symbols onto the photo
  • very sophisticated app that looks and works great
  • works off-line, no WiFi needed

Thumbs Down

  • requires a very lengthy sign up process in order to use it the first time
  • no instructions, takes too long to figure out how to use it (maybe they should have a video tutorial?)
  • only offers 11 hazards to choose from – in my career I’ve encountered thousands of different types of hazards
  • we’d rarely use their 11 pre-made hazard icons – instead, we prefer to just put a sticky note on the photo with a description of the hazard and controls
  • far too many screens to complete for a simple inspection

Overall Rating

  • iPad/iPhone  – ♥♥♥♥
  • Android  –  not currently available
  • Overall – Risk Assessor is overly complex, we find the Safety John risk assessment app to be faster, simpler, and easier to use
