Below is this week’s “Safety App of the Week“.  Every Monday we publish an article that reviews and rates a new workplace safety app.  Our testing is done on Apple iPads and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3s.  We rate each app from to ♥♥♥♥♥ (♥♥♥♥♥ is the best).  Prior app of the week articles are archived here.

Pre Start Checks

The Official Work Safe App – Pre Start Checks – Safety Checks

•Do away with costly paper log books

•Work safe is an easy to use application

•Lets the operator complete all required pre start checks on any type of machinery, plant or working platform.

•The checklist covers the OH&S requirement to be completed before use at the start of each shift.

•This application simplifies the task of completing the mandatory check list and does away with any paper log books that quiet often get lost or become damaged.

•Once completed the app saves all checklists with operator name and license details, it then emails to all required e-mail addresses, such as site OHS officer or company OH&S manager.
•The completed list is saved to the device and is available to be reviewed on request as required for auditing or other purposes.

•If any machine or plant fails a check the item can be flagged and a “fail” e-mail is sent to the emails provided with the ability to attach up to 3 images of the problem at hand, this can assist with any timely repair and the ordering of any parts.

•This is the ideal app for any type of tradesman, machine operator, handyman or OH&S personal including on site trainers.

Thumbs Up

  • cost is only $4.99
  • registration is free
  • intuitive navigation
  • easy to read and visually attractive
  • each checklist consists of about 15 pass/fail questions
  • can both email completed checklists and archive them
  • works off-line, no WiFi needed

Thumbs Down

  • email addresses do not “auto-populate” – you must type in each email address manually
  • poor grammar and spelling
  • only 8 pre-made checklists are provided
  • checklist questions are too general and basic
  • checklists are not OSHA compliant
  • can’t modify the pre-made checklists
  • can’t develop your own checklists within the app
  • can’t add your own checklists to the app

Overall Rating

  • iPad / iPhone  – ♥♥
  • Android  –  not currently available
  • Overall this app looks and works OK, but its’ downfall are the checklists (low quality and too few).   For inspections, we much prefer our five heart rated iAuditor – Safety Audit and Checklist app.
